John "Chris" Hurrell

I grew up in Southern California spending summers swimming in the ocean, so
needless to say swimming, surfing, and body surfing were some of my favorite
summer past times.  During college at the University of California, Davis I began to
ride on a regular basis.  (Everyone at Davis has a bike, and I mean everyone!)  A
couple of friends of mine knew a guy named Dave Scott back then and of his
dominance in the sport of triathlon.  These friends got the idea and then talked me
into my first triathlon in the summer of 1992.  I raced a couple of Olympic distance
triathlons and with little to no run-training I did not do very well, but the seed had
been planted.  Fast forward to 2002 when those same friends decided to get back
into shape and race again.  They called me up and asked if I was interested and
the rest is history.

I've been competing in triathlons for the past
5 years and getting better every
year.  I became a USAT certified level I coach in 2005 and began coaching
athletes of all levels and abilities.
Last year I realized that a number of my athletes
needed help with their swim technique, so wanting to get as many tools as possible
to help them I became a USA Swimming coach.   I really enjoy coaching, seeing the
progress that my athletes make and helping them to reach their goals.

I am very committed and have the drive and determination to maintain my podium
finishes and push me to the next level.  Next year I plan on pursuing a USAT level II
coaching certification and continuing to learn all I can about the sport of triathlon.
